Choosing a book, especially for reluctant readers, can be a challenge. Working online with some of these materials would certainly offer a different look for savvy teenagers and give them new ideas for reading. Initiated by author Steve Alten, this website uses this author's (and others') books to excite reluctant readers with good stories, incorporating technology with planning. While this site offers a complete program for sale, you can register for free and use most of the materials without buying anything. It offers five books by Alten as well as several other fiction and nonfiction titles by different authors. Each book includes materials such as a PowerPoint of the curriculum, a chapter to peruse, activities, quizzes, etc. The variety of books offered is interesting, including an autobiography of Gerda Weissman Klein, a Holocaust survivor, and a finance nonfiction book to help teens prepare for their futures. This site does have sponsors and minor advertising.

In the Classroom
Allowing students to choose among these books may encourage them to read. Having students "teach" their book to the rest of the class after they have finished it might be an activity that would urge other students to pick up those books, too. Extend learning by having students share their books creatively: write a blog post as a character using Telescope, make a video using Adobe Express Video Maker, to post on TeacherTube or SchoolTube, or make a podcast "interview" of the main character, played by a classmate using Acast. Bring reading into the 21st century reality of your students and watch the two worlds "mash" together.

The students have reformatted and illustrated the traditional Aesop Fables; the project is ongoing, having started in 1994. Today, some stories are simply text, while others use Flash, which isn't supported in all browsers.

This unit from the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute presents a collection of African American folktales as a foundation for understanding the heritage, history, and cultural resilience of African American communities. Through carefully selected tales and integrated lesson plans, the unit helps students develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, art, vocabulary, social studies, and even math and science skills, using folktales as a cross-curricular springboard. Teachers are guided to introduce folktales by building background on the stories' origins, exploring vocabulary, reading aloud or performing the tales, and then inviting students to respond, summarize, reflect, or extend the stories through writing, discussion, art, or related subject activities. Ultimately, this unit aims to strengthen students' literacy and creative expression while honoring the power of oral tradition and storytelling rooted in African American history.

After a lesson or reading assignment, have students work with the teacher to generate study guides that include vocabulary support, comprehension questions, summaries, and extension challenges. "AI is for Everyone, Everywhere" is a teacher research guide on integrating artificial intelligence into education. The research handbook includes webinars and The Hands-On AI Projects for the Classroom guide are from ISTE and GM. Guides contain innovative, student-driven projects that meet subject area standards while teaching students the foundations of AI and how it impacts our society. This research guide includes an extensive, downloadable document with in-depth projects and lesson plans to teach students about artificial intelligence. Separate guides are available for elementary, secondary, electives, computer science, and ethics and are available in multiple languages, including; English, Spanish, and Arabic. Look at the projects by scrolling down the page and finding the section that says 1. Select a group, 2. Select a Language. Then you download the PDF Guide.

In the Classroom
Read over the guide deciding which parts need to be shared with the class. Introduce the guide and the projects to students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector through the part "activate prior knowledge." Then pair more computer savvy students with novice computer users or weak readers with stronger readers as needed. Next, the student-driven approach to the projects includes "Take a Closer Look" activities are scaffolded, guided learning activities that connect subject-area content and artificial intelligence concepts. "Culminating Performances" are meaningful performance tasks that challenge students to synthesize their learning and reflect on what they have learned. Once students have finished the first project, consider setting up computer stations for students to try out the different AI projects. Minecraft Education shares several free videos, teaching resources, and parent guides to help you learn the basics of artificial intelligence (AI). These resources do not require using the paid Minecraft platform and are available to all viewers. Begin with a three-part animated video series that features AI basics, problem-solving with AI, and using AI tools responsibly. Additional materials available to download are classroom-ready teaching materials, a parent guide, and a free poster. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.
