The canvas where you will create has a right menu. Choose a template, text, photos, shapes, backgrounds, and design assets from the left menu. Adobe Express for Education (was Adobe Spark for Education) offers this version of it's popular presentation tool, reviewed here, specifically for education. Use Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education to create multimedia projects or presentations using the available templates and graphics tools. The Education version provides enhanced data privacy and the ability for students to log in with a code. This tool can be available through your school's Adobe Admin Counsel if your IT team already uses Adobe products. If not, follow directions on the site to set up and begin using this tool as an individual educator.

Have students record short videos of fast actions, such as dropping a ball, snapping their fingers, or pouring water, and then use the slow-motion tool to analyze what really happens. They can write observations explaining what they notice in slow motion that they could not see at normal speed. Students can record themselves acting out a scene from a story or reading dialogue, then slow down parts to practice expression, pacing, and pronunciation. Adobe Firefly uses generative AI (artificial intelligence) and simple prompts to create images, text effects, and color palettes fueled by your imagination. Visit Firefly's Gallery for inspiration, or begin your journey by selecting from several options. Options include editing video, text-to-image, generative fill, text effects, regenerative color, 3D-to-image, and text-to-vector. Additional options are in Beta. After choosing an option and signing in to your account, follow the directions to add a prompt with what you wish to create. Use Firefly's filters and editing options to select one of the generated images and fine-tune it to your desired appearance. When satisfied with your creation, select the "more options" icon to download, copy, or copy the link to your image or save images to your library for later access.

Choosing a book, especially for reluctant readers, can be a challenge. Working online with some of these materials would certainly offer a different look for savvy teenagers and give them new ideas for reading. Initiated by author Steve Alten, this website uses this author's (and others') books to excite reluctant readers with good stories, incorporating technology with planning. While this site offers a complete program for sale, you can register for free and use most of the materials without buying anything. It offers five books by Alten as well as several other fiction and nonfiction titles by different authors. Each book includes materials such as a PowerPoint of the curriculum, a chapter to peruse, activities, quizzes, etc. The variety of books offered is interesting, including an autobiography of Gerda Weissman Klein, a Holocaust survivor, and a finance nonfiction book to help teens prepare for their futures. This site does have sponsors and minor advertising.

In the Classroom
Allowing students to choose among these books may encourage them to read. Having students "teach" their book to the rest of the class after they have finished it might be an activity that would urge other students to pick up those books, too. Extend learning by having students share their books creatively: write a blog post as a character using Telescope, make a video using Adobe Express Video Maker, to post on TeacherTube or SchoolTube, or make a podcast "interview" of the main character, played by a classmate using Acast. Bring reading into the 21st century reality of your students and watch the two worlds "mash" together.

The students have reformatted and illustrated the traditional Aesop Fables; the project is ongoing, having started in 1994. Today, some stories are simply text, while others use Flash, which isn't supported in all browsers.

Affinity is a free professional design application that combines photo editing, vector illustration, and page layout tools into a single downloadable program for Windows and macOS. Students and teachers can use its Pixel, Vector, and Layout studios to edit photographs, create original graphics and logos, design posters or infographics, and produce polished multi-page publications such as newsletters, brochures, and portfolios. Its layer-based tools and customizable workspace make it a strong option for digital art, media, and presentation projects, particularly when students need more precise design controls than a basic online creation tool provides. The core software is free, although some Canva AI features available within Affinity may require a Pro Canva plan, which is free for educators by enrolling in Canva for Education, reviewed here.

This unit from the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute presents a collection of African American folktales as a foundation for understanding the heritage, history, and cultural resilience of African American communities. Through carefully selected tales and integrated lesson plans, the unit helps students develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, art, vocabulary, social studies, and even math and science skills, using folktales as a cross-curricular springboard. Teachers are guided to introduce folktales by building background on the stories' origins, exploring vocabulary, reading aloud or performing the tales, and then inviting students to respond, summarize, reflect, or extend the stories through writing, discussion, art, or related subject activities. Ultimately, this unit aims to strengthen students' literacy and creative expression while honoring the power of oral tradition and storytelling rooted in African American history.

Share a short African American folktale from the unit and have students sit in small circles to discuss one question: What message or lesson do you think this story is trying to teach? Invite students to choose a character from a folktale and act out how that character might move, speak, or react in a given situation. Select new or challenging words from the unit's stories. The site provides color-coded suggestions for revisions in spelling, grammar, or style. If you like After the Deadline, they offer an add-on for the Firefox web browser and an extension for the Google Chrome web browser. There are also plug-ins for self-hosted WordPress blogs and forums.
