Use Add Text to add captions to images to create memes or posters for your bulletin boards. Use this easy tool with students during back to school time as a way for them to get to know each other. Have students upload a picture of themselves doing their favorite activity and label it with amusing text or a favorite quote (or song lyrics?). Have them upload images that represent their interests and character traits. Print the images with text for a back to school bulletin board. Use after a field trip for students to write captions on the photos they took. Be sure to share the photos on your class webpage, blog, or wiki. Haven't started blogging yet? Check out TeachersFirst's Blog Basics. For other uses, have students practice new words in a world language class by labeling and identifying images in that language. Help ENL/ESL students learn English by labeling the images. Create writing prompts using several annotated images. Have students create annotated images to explain key terms in science class. Adobe Express for Education (was Adobe Spark for Education) offers this version of it's popular presentation tool, reviewed here, specifically for education. Use Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education to create multimedia projects or presentations using the available templates and graphics tools. The Education version provides enhanced data privacy and the ability for students to log in with a code. This tool can be available through your school's Adobe Admin Counsel if your IT team already uses Adobe products. Have students record short videos of fast actions, such as dropping a ball, snapping their fingers, or pouring water, and then use the slow-motion tool to analyze what really happens. They can write observations explaining what they notice in slow motion that they could not see at normal speed. Adobe Firefly uses generative AI (artificial intelligence) and simple prompts to create images, text effects, and color palettes fueled by your imagination. Visit Firefly's Gallery for inspiration, or begin your journey by selecting from several options. Options include editing video, text-to-image, generative fill, text effects, regenerative color, 3D-to-image, and text-to-vector. Additional options are in Beta. After choosing an option and signing in to your account, follow the directions to add a prompt with what you wish to create. Use Firefly's filters and editing options to select one of the generated images and fine-tune it to your desired appearance. When satisfied with your creation, select the "more options" icon to download, copy, or copy the link to your image or save images to your library for later access.

Choosing a book, especially for reluctant readers, can be a challenge. Working online with some of these materials would certainly offer a different look for savvy teenagers and give them new ideas for reading. Initiated by author Steve Alten, this website uses this author's (and others') books to excite reluctant readers with good stories, incorporating technology with planning. While this site offers a complete program for sale, you can register for free and use most of the materials without buying anything. It offers five books by Alten as well as several other fiction and nonfiction titles by different authors. Each book includes materials such as a PowerPoint of the curriculum, a chapter to peruse, activities, quizzes, etc. The variety of books offered is interesting, including an autobiography of Gerda Weissman Klein, a Holocaust survivor, and a finance nonfiction book to help teens prepare for their futures. This site does have sponsors and minor advertising.

In the Classroom
Allowing students to choose among these books may encourage them to read. Having students "teach" their book to the rest of the class after they have finished it might be an activity that would urge other students to pick up those books, too. Extend learning by having students share their books creatively: write a blog post as a character using Telescope, make a video using Adobe Express Video Maker, to post on TeacherTube or SchoolTube, or make a podcast "interview" of the main character, played by a classmate using Acast. Bring reading into the 21st century reality of your students and watch the two worlds "mash" together.

The students have reformatted and illustrated the traditional Aesop Fables; the project is ongoing, having started in 1994. Today, some stories are simply text, while others use Flash, which isn't supported in all browsers.

Affordable Colleges Online provides extensive information about the costs and the programs offered for online degrees. Use tabs at the top of each page to view by degrees, majors, states, rankings, or additional resources. Other options allow viewers to see colleges offering cheap, quality online degrees, explore accreditation, and search for religious college options. One resource worth exploring is the section describing options for financial aid, including many valuable statistics and information for finding the most financial aid.

In the Classroom
Many students are considering virtual degrees, and almost all college-bound students need information on financial aid options. Affordable Colleges Online is a useful site to include with information on college search strategies, consider bookmarking it for college-bound students. This tool is helpful for high school guidance counselors or teachers who work with juniors and seniors. Provide the link on your class website for families to access and explore at home.

In the Classroom
Use this book list as a starting point for finding books to add to your classroom or school library for students to learn about Africa's many diverse areas and people. Begin a class project using Google My Maps, reviewed here, to share the settings of books about Africa. Ask students to include a short book review for each location added. Extend learning by creating a class podcast that discusses books read by students using Buzzsprout, reviewed here. Boston University's Pardee School of Global Studies shares many free resources for teaching about Africa in all grade-level classrooms. Follow the links to access featured resources, podcasts, teaching tips, and more. In addition, there is an extensive library for educators divided into grade-level categories. Each category includes resources for pedagogy, children's literature, lesson plans and activities, and additional classroom resources. Also, this website provides links to teaching about Africa divided into topics that include climate change, geography, literature and language, and others.

Consider using a curation tool such as Milanote, reviewed here, to organize your ideas and projects into one location. Add links, notes, images, and more onto one Milanote vision board to make it easy to find and view your resources and ideas. In the Classroom
Use the poems by Phyllis Wheatley to complement a lesson on supporters of the American Revolution. Wheatley is often a studied character in American History, and her poems often confront American Independence and slavery. Share the poems with students at the end of a lesson, and have them analyze as a class what she is trying to say about either subject.
