In the Classroom
Introduce this site during a comparative literature unit to help students explore how a single story transforms across different cultures. The Unit includes thought provoking questions on topics relevant to the award winning book by Scott O'Dell and today's students. This unit has a glossary (vocabulary) and questions to guide students for each chapter. After completing the lessons teacher's can use a rubric created for this unit as a final assessment. Teachers will find the lessons are detailed and clearly written. Student's may find the suggested extension activities both interesting and challenging.

The National Park Service presents this massive unit for Island of the Blue Dolphins. See the village, visit the island, and learn about the sea life around the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students will love this artistic interactive site full of pictures they can click on to visit links that ask questions and give more information. Across the top menu are many resources for teachers and students. There is an "About the Author" with a short biography about Scott O'Dell. Choose to follow the story by chapter or theme. Click the picture for each chapter and scroll to the bottom to find a writing prompt and lesson plan. There are many clickable resources in-between.

If you use literature circles (small reading groups) in your classroom, using a unit like this and allowing the groups to go through the unit at their own pace, or suggesting a jigsaw approach to reviewing a set of chapters is a good way to make this unit "student centered." Learn about the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach at Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here. Enhance student learning by asking them to make an Infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, about what they learned from the novel; an inforgraphic would be a great conclusion for the lit circle project. Post the infographics on your web page for all your students and their parents to enjoy.

Here's a great explanation of all aspects of Writer's Workshop. Activities from 'Mini-lessons' to 'Sharing' (and all steps in-between) leading up to the crucial role of sharing student writing in group reading sessions are each discussed on this web page. Be sure to click "5 Editing Strategies That Actually Work For Student Writers." Once students understand how to edit someone elses work, their writing improves. This is a wealth of usable information for a teacher new to Writer's Workshop.

To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast. Here's a site by Easy Fun School that is a very mini-unit. It has a brief Book Summary of Beverly Cleary' story , a paragraph About the Author with a few details, 9 vocabulary words suitable for 4th and 5th Grade students, and 5 questions that lack depth. Teachers may be able to use this site for information to share with younger students while the book is being read aloud in class, or as individual assignments for the older student who need a starting place for a book report. We wish there were more detailed classroom applications.

This Australian site has collected a number of legends and packaged them, nicely illustrated, in a single collection that's easy to browse. Upper elementary students can use these on their own, or try them as a read-along for primary students. Lots of good ideas here.

By accessing the "Animal" section, and then "weird animal facts," the site provides some excellent class room openers to spur discussion! Did you know Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur? Or that Penguins can jump 6 feet in the air? This site from PBS provides examples of these, a look at some common story themes, and audio files with a number of different stories. Try using this one in a study of Native Americans or as part of a unit on stories from different cultures. Although this site is slightly dated, and some of the audio files are not updated, the content of this site remains relevant and useful to many classes; there is a lot of good information here.
