Mahara is an open-source e-portfolio creator. Download the Mahara software to begin creating your e-portfolio, including journals, social media resources, and uploading files. Once created, share your portfolio using access permissions, allowing members to determine who can view their work. Other features include a resume builder and a social networking system connecting members to online learning communities. Scroll to the bottom to find Mahara Support, which contains links to a User Manual and Wiki. There is even a demo for you to use for the day to preview Mahara.

With the free plan, users can create projects using built-in characters, backgrounds, text, and voice tools, including basic lip-sync and simple animations. The free version limits the number of exports per month and may include watermarks, but it still provides enough features for classroom projects, storytelling, and presentations. Animaker is an online animation and video creation tool that can be used on any device with internet access, making it a good choice for BYOD or blended classrooms because no software download is required. The free plan allows students to create animated videos using templates, characters, text, and voice tools, but it limits the number of exports per month and may include a watermark on finished videos. While paid plans include additional collaboration and workspace features, the free version still works well for individual or small-group projects in the classroom. The apps include a spreadsheet, word processor, KWL tool, PDF, Flipbook, and a mind mapping tool. Two or more students work together using their own devices to collaborate on any project either face to face or from a distance. In addition to the apps, the site also offers a few starter activities, called Roadmaps for download. Apps use Google logins and work best in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari browsers. Share a video with students once a week to help all of you learn about the chemistry in our everyday lives. Flip your classroom and use a video as homework. Have students take notes on the material and write down any remaining questions and topics that confuse them. They can do this with pen and paper or online. If you want the assignment online, explain to students they need to open a new tab in their browser window and take notes with a tool such as Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Learn all about physics with this YouTube Channel "for every atom and eve." Topics explore physics from an everyday point of view with titles such as "How to not get shocked exiting a car" and "5 weird ways to put out a candle." Be sure to check out the playlists with videos sorted into topics including Everyday Physics, Brainteasers and Paradoxes, and Space and the Universe. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Flip your classroom and use a video as homework. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. Or, use a tool like EdPuzzle, reviewed here, for students to pause videos and ask or answer questions right on the video. These activities can uncover misconceptions. Show the video to the class, and then discuss the concept at length. Set up a video chat time for one of the YouTube videos using a tool such as Watch Together, reviewed here. Science in the Classroom offers free annotated research articles and teaching materials. Choose any item to read each article in full. Dig a little deeper by selecting a Learning Lens, found at the bottom of any article under Teaching Resources, to focus on specific information within the article such as conclusions or connections to standards highlighted by different colors. Also, this site offers Thought Questions for each article allowing readers to extend thinking beyond the information provided. Some selections include videos. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Science in the Classroom is a must-add to any high school classroom. View articles together on your interactive whiteboard as you add highlighted annotations to focus on the content. Alternatively, print a copy of the article and have students add highlights to compare to the site's highlighted portions. Be sure to help weaker readers and ESL/ELL students by sharing the vocabulary words before reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard or screen and highlighting them in the text as you come to them. Flip learning by having students read an article before coming to class, ask them to prepare questions they have for when they return to class. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Venngage, reviewed here.
