This site offers a history of Groundhog Day along with a year by year recap of the groundhog's forecast. It is divided into sections for easier viewing, sections include origins of Groundhog Day, information on the movie of the same title, along with the history and a list of each year's shadow observations. Although very simple, this site is worth a visit to gather facts and information about the Groundhog Day observance.

tag(s): holidays (292), weather (170)

In the Classroom

Share information and facts from the site with students on Groundhog Day. Punxsutawney Phil's forecast has only been accurate 39% of the time according to this site, share this fact with students and have them research how this percentage would change if there had more or less correct observances. Have students research weather conditions in your city for the same dates and compare that to see how it could have worked out if Phil were from your hometown.

Use as a study aid for students. This is a great tool for older students (who own cell phones). Students can study their flashcards on the bus, in the backseat of the family car, or while waiting for their dentist appointment! Have students create individual accounts and collaborate with others or create a class account for all to use. Have groups collaborate on the creation of flashcards for students to use or have groups create flashcards for specific parts of the unit. Learning support students can take their extra help along with them.

Explore your world! Learn about Life! Record observations! This site is based upon the idea that naturalists record observations and that sharing information is a good thing! iNaturalist is a free online citizen science website and app that allows students to explore nature by photographing plants, animals, and insects and then sharing their observations with a global community that helps identify species. The site encourages scientific thinking, outdoor exploration, and data collection while contributing real information to biodiversity research. Teachers can use class projects, observation challenges, and existing lesson resources to guide students in learning about ecosystems, classification, and environmental stewardship. The site also includes educator guides, project tools, and activities that support classroom use and outdoor investigations.

tag(s): animals (281), biodiversity (44), citizen science (45), classification (20), data (214), ecosystems (115), photography (136), plants (141), species (15)

In the Classroom

Assign groups to different habitats, such as a forest, a pond, a park, or a neighborhood. Students can research species commonly found there and compare their findings with observations on iNaturalist. Groups can present how living things adapt to their environment. Have students find 5 different living things and classify them as plants, insects, birds, mammals, reptiles, or fungi. Students use iNaturalist identifications to check their answers and write one fact about each organism. Take students outside to observe plants, insects, and animals around the school. Students photograph or sketch what they see, then upload observations to iNaturalist to identify species. Afterward, create a class chart using Infographics Presentation Templates, reviewed here showing how many different living things were found.

MrNussbaum.com was developed with the idea that crucial concepts, themes, ideas, and fact sets taught in the classroom can be enhanced over the internet through interactivity. Furthermore, for teachers to have a reliable k -8 internet site to use in the computer lab or in the classroom, that likely covers one or many themes currently being taught. The Science portion of the site is mainly devoted to information about animals; however, there are also portions on space, biomes, and the periodic table. The animal section is divided into portions by animal such as penguins, birds, sharks, insects, mammals and more. After clicking the link there are several activities matching games, scavenger hunts, anatomy, and other themed activities.

Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you introduce a science unit. Create a link on classroom computers to use as a center for students to practice information learned during a science unit. Share this link on your class website for students to access at home.

Use the large, empty canvas by dragging and dropping elements. Generate and post your form online and receive an email for every survey response.

tag(s): polls and surveys (44)

In the Classroom

Use in the classroom for a survey, collecting student information, or any time you are looking for feedback. Use this site for checking student knowledge quickly and easily. Use in projects, including graduation projects. Students can collect data for analysis. Teachers can collect input from parents or students, including conference concerns to know about in advance or questions students have about current curriculum topics. Students who might never speak up in class may be willing to share their questions online, especially if it is anonymous.

Comments

Jotform is really easy to use! But there are some limits regarding how long and often you can use it without paying. I also use Google forms/ spreadsheets in my class to make forms. Google spreadsheets also have gadgets that let you graph the results! Elise, CO, Grades: 0 - 12

Promote environmental citizenship through this site's "green learning" units. The curriculum ranges from examining how electricity works, understanding the balance of ecosystems, to a high school unit on sustainable futures. Enjoy the interactive wind turbine and carbon calculator. The animation for grades 4 - 7 is engaging, and the video presentations for high school students on sustainability is powerful. Green Learning provides educators with an array of hands-on activities, online learning opportunities, printable materials, assessment tools, and valuable resources such as environmental experts to contact. Each environmental concept taught provides opportunities for real world learning, encourages social action, and advocacy. Teacher friendly planning tools can help meet instructional time constraints, students learning styles, and promote cross-curricular connections. The site is free but requires registration. Membership provides access to additional educational materials and a monthly newsletter. This program comes to us from Canada.

In the Classroom

The e-Card project series (found under Programs) invites students to research a topic, write a persuasive letter to an individual they believe makes decisions that effect environment, then design and create an e-Card. Have your students share their work on the e-Cards website and view what other students have created.

There is a range of lessons and activities here, some more complex than others. You may want to choose a few that fit your curricular needs and then allow small groups of students to investigate one together. Have student groups make an online Blabberize, reviewed here, of things they discover about their topic, and later rearrange the items to "explain" their topic to classmates visually. Blabberize is a photo editing tool that creates talking animations from a photo or other image.
