The Flickr Bad Maths Group shares photographic examples of crazy offers, signs, and specials where the math just doesn't "add up." Some are obviously bad; others may take some calculations to spot the error. Scroll through to find actual images from stores offering specials such as $10/month or $199 for 18 months. Click on any image to view or share using social networking links. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings (and some of the currency) may differ from those in America. However, American dollars are also shown at this site.

tag(s): financial literacy (91)

In the Classroom

Use Bad Maths images as a great class starter discussion. Display an image on your interactive whiteboard and challenge students to find the flaw. Since many photos show British currency and metric units, use these images as a way to learn conversions to more familiar units. Challenge students to find their own examples of Bad Maths in your neighborhood and share in class. Give them bonus points for taking a cell phone shot and sending it to you! Have students take a picture of the "bad math" and create personalized images (with text) using PicFont, reviewed here.

This site is sure to make some stomachs grumble and some mouths water! In math class, explore or multiply fractions used in recipes. In science, Family and Consumer Science (FACS), or health class, explore the nutrition side of Foodista. Help students gain a better understanding of diabetes or food allergies. Use to create food for special celebrations of literature or in social studies as you study cultures around the world. Allow students to choose food for special class celebrations. In your FACS class, use the blog area as a weekly update for new recipes, home care, and nutrition ideas.

Begin with the quiz to see what students know. Share the quiz on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students take the quiz independently in a BYOD classroom (or computer lab/laptops). As they take the quiz, students can note items that interest or disturb them. Begin a class discussion with the most interesting or shocking items they learned from taking the quiz. Research the history of the Farm Bill, the FDA, or the USDA. Compare diets of today and of the past, and identify differences and medical issues (good or bad.) You can join the program for free and see if your school qualifies to receive grants to help educate your students about exercise, nutrition, and healthy eating and also to increase student access to more physical education programs and better foods. Check with your school administrators to be sure it is acceptable to have your school join and to allow your students to individually register. "Quick Start Resources" help you learn how to use the program and set up their class as a team.

The best part, the documents are available from any computer with Internet access. This is a device-agnostic tool, available on the web but also available for free as both an Android and iOS app. Important note: To OPEN this link and see the templates, you must have a Google Drive account and be logged in! Use it from any device or move between several devices and still access your work. App and web versions vary slightly. No need to create a new document. Simply search for the template you need and modify it to your specifications. Choose from many categories including resumes, presentations, calendars, budgets, and more. Once you find a document to use, preview to view the full document. Viewed documents will then be available under a link called "Templates I've Used." You can also "save a copy" to change it at will. This makes them easy to find in the future. Upload your own documents for use anywhere and anytime.

Look at the map on an Interactive Whiteboard (or projector) to look at the different colors and determine what they represent. Zoom in to the Nile region to view the stark contrast between the Nile River delta and the desert that surrounds it. Brainstorm how vegetation changes can indicate potential forest fires or drought and how weather is predicted based upon vegetation, humidity, runoff, and surface temperature. Compare the locations of high vegetation to those with low or no vegetation. What factors change the locations of these areas? Watch this interactive over a period of time (possibly the whole school year) to identify changes in areas around the world. Create a presentation about the changes in vegetation including research as to why it is very important. Find great tools on TeachersFirst for creating presentations or Infographics. Tie discussion of this map into economics, political policy, our food system, health statistics, and more.

In the Classroom

Students can brainstorm health and nutrition concerns among their class and then work in groups to obtain information and dispel myths. Students can survey their class or school to obtain information on what students their age know. Have groups present information to the class learned through the survey and research on the site. Additionally, students can create a newsletter for the class, school, or community or publish information to a wiki or blog. Students can also create a goal for personal wellness and health. Their action plan can use relevant facts and information from this site. For example, students can research TV viewing habits, habits that can make a person fat, and identifying unhealthy food.
