Yippy self-filters against many topics that students shouldn't be exposed to, such as gambling, pornography, political propaganda, or other inappropriate sites. As always, keep a close eye on students working independently and talk about what to do when something inappropriate comes up. While Yippy is safer than a general search engine, students still need to learn about safe and ethical behavior online, since nothing is foolproof. Enter your search term. View the definition at the top. Different clusters appear along the left navigation side to help refine your search and help beginning searchers learn how to add more specific terms.

Use for any topic in any subject area. For example, a search for evolution revealed the following clusters: Texas Board, Biology, Human, and Theory. View more options by clicking on all clouds at the bottom of the list. Discuss with your class what kind of information about the topic that you are looking for before choosing a cloud. Bookmark and save this handy tool for many classroom uses. Displayed through a visual timeline, this is an excellent way for students to look at information and provide context through the order of events. Create a timeline to share on your interactive whiteboard when studying historical characters and events. Use the editing tool to narrow down information by specific dates or delete items irrelevant to your lesson. Ask students to compare and contrast people or events to help them get perspective on events leading up to important moments in history. For example, create a timeline for Thomas Jefferson and another for Alexander Hamilton and ask students to compare and contrast important events in their lives and consider how these impacted their view on America's founding principles. Have students share their reflections and information on a simple webpage created using Carrd, reviewed here. Expand learning further by asking students to use a presentation tool such as Sway, reviewed here, to demonstrate understanding. Ask students to include a link to their Wikipedia timeline along with images, Venn diagram comparisons, and other information found during their research. Brought to you by NewseumED, this video is a perfect fit to introduce any unit on the First Amendment and its freedoms. Find a comprehensive lesson plan, watch the video through the NewseumEd site, and download documents in either PDF or Word formats. The documents include a list of historical figures and their involvement with the issues from the period, and a viewing guide worksheet for students to fill in. All of the actors' words, in the video, are direct quotations taken from primary sources. Since the video focuses on the origins of the freedom of the press, it would make a fascinating intro to a media literacy unit, too. You must create a free account to view the whole lesson.

In the Classroom
Whether studying the First Amendment or media literacy, upload this video to a tool such as EDPuzzle, reviewed here, to edit the video to show only portions you select, or to pause the video automatically and add questions for students to answer, and/or add your verbal comments. Some of the Discuss questions would be appropriate to insert after viewing parts of the video. Break students into small groups after the video and assign them different Discuss questions for reflection and investigation. Challenge small groups to create a presentation to share what they learned using a tool like Google Slides, reviewed here. After watching and discussing the video, extend either a media literacy unit or a civics/government unit. Do this by asking students to view news articles in our present political situation i.e. election time, civil rights discussed, etc. Then have them compare how the news media during the late 1700s would have handled issues of today, and how politicians of the Federalist party would have reacted to our issues today. Alternatively, have students create a simple infographic comparing the problems in the news of then and now. Use a tool such as Infogram, reviewed here.

Follow the prompts to add one or more items to your notebook. When ready, use the "Notebook Guide" to create study guides, FAQs, a table of contents, a timeline, or a briefing document. Once you create documents, you can select them to gather and develop additional resources, such as an outline, or ask NotebookLM to suggest related ideas. The audio summary option creates a two-person conversation in the form of a podcast to discuss the information, offering customization options that include the ability to focus the discussion on a specific topic or audience. Create flashcards for your classes -- or have them make their own. Try using them as an introduction to a concept, then again in the practice of the concept, and one more time as a final review. This would be great for teaching Latin prefixes and suffixes of words used in science terms or for standardized test preparation. Try having students create flashcards and share with each other to quiz themselves within their own groups. Clicking on Discussion Group in the upper right corner to start a discussion thread about a flashcard to extend learning. Teach students in higher grades how to create flash cards with multiple blanks to challenge their brain to remember more pieces of the puzzle. Show them how to carefully read through their classroom notes and underline the most important word or words in a sentence. Then have them leave out the most important words for their flashcards. Learning support teachers might want to have small groups create cards together to review together before tests. In the Classroom
Good.is is perfect for enrichment, research, or a current events class. Include it on your class web page (if you are comfortable with the description: a community of people who give a d---) for students to access both in and out of class. Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center. For students who enjoy current events, Good.is is a terrific source of up-to-the-minute positive stories from across the web. There is advertising, but it is not too intrusive. Use this site as one of several current event options when asking students to find real world connections to curriculum topics. You can always send students directly to the full articles on their original sites to avoid displaying the Good.is frame at the top. NicerTube lets you share YouTube videos in a clean, uncluttered format that is easier for students to view and focus on. It transforms a standard YouTube link into an attractive, distraction-free page. To use it, paste in any YouTube video URL, choose a design style, and select a background such as a solid color or webpage layout. Once your design is complete, copy the new link and share it with students. The free version lets you create up to 3 lessons, making it best for occasional use or testing before committing to more. If your district blocks YouTube, this tool may or may not work with your school filters, so it is recommended to test a sample link first.
