Remove and replace the background from images quickly and without registration using Strip Background. Click start, then drag and drop or upload an image from your device. Once processed, download the new image or use the features available to add a new background color, image, or effect. Choose new backgrounds by uploading an image, or select an image from the site's gallery or Pixabay. When editing is complete, choose "file" and then save it as a JPG, PNG, or WebP. Be careful not to select links that say download; those are advertising links.

In the Classroom

Before asking students to use Strip Background, demonstrate how to create and save images. Consider recording a tutorial using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, then sharing a link on student and classroom devices. Discussing copyright and fair use best practices is always an excellent idea when editing images. Use Strip Background to enhance students' presentations and stories. For example, remove the background from a student's picture and then add a background with them in a location or setting that is part of their project. Choose a background image of a city being studied, a different time, or a far-away setting like the moon, then place your student image on top. Resize the image to fit the scene. Include this image as a starter for class projects. Use images on top of book covers for book talks, create images for story characters and heroes, or use them for weather reports. The ideas for using this tool are only limited by your imagination and that of your students. Include the new images as part of larger multimedia projects created using Canva Edu, reviewed here or maps created using Google My Maps, reviewed here.

Display and use these very short videos on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to introduce and explore the world of art to students. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos based on other famous works of art and share them on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. Do a collaborative project with your school's art teacher, having students write in English/LA class and discuss art in that class. Have older students explore areas of this site to find artwork from time periods studied in Social Studies classes. Display one of the works of art and view the short video. Use the art piece as inspiration for a creative writing project. Use videos during career exploration units to demonstrate the different career options available within the field of art. Create a link to videos on classroom computers for students to view on their own or use the embed code to add a video on your class website or blog for additional exploration. Teachers of gifted who have students interested in visual arts can use this site to take them further, even if art is not your expertise!

Ask and answer any question with the Q&A Wiki. This site is a classic example of using the "wisdom (or not-so-wisdom) of the crowd." Using the Wiki format, user-contributors amend answers with an improved response if desired. Type a question in the search bar or search and browse through different sections such as food, health, or politics. Find basic "how to" information and directions for questions asked by others. Registration isn't required to search and browse the site. However, registration using email or social networking links allows users to post and answer questions. At the time of this review, there were no offensive topics. However, not all topics are "classroom-appropriate."

Share the Q&A Wiki with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and explore answers to classroom questions. Post a question, and challenge students to share their response. Use choices of questions from this site as writing prompts for informational writing. Have students find good (and not-so-good) examples of how-to responses as they learn to write their own step by step directions. Challenge students to explore the site to find incorrect or incomplete answers to questions and use this as part of a lesson on evaluating Internet sources. How can you decide whether the information is accurate? Provide this link on your class website for students (and families) to use together.

The Mind is a Metaphor is something like a dictionary for finding metaphors. There are over ten thousand of them. Though many are mental metaphors, there are some that don't relate to the mind. This site originally started with an "expanded eighteenth century" list, but now has metaphors from as late as the 1990's. Search for a metaphor by literary period, author, genre, gender, and several others. You may also enjoy the creator's blog with his interpretations of his favorite metaphors at Blog for The Mind is a Metaphor.

In the Classroom

High school AP literature and history teachers or IB capstone classes will especially love this site. Share a metaphor a day as students are entering the class or on your class web site. Allow a student to choose one as today's Metaphor Master! Discuss the meaning together or use it as a quick writing prompt. Use the time period to discuss the historical context of the metaphor. Use these in your own presentations or require students to create a presentation explaining the metaphors you assign. Younger students just beginning to study metaphors can benefit from trying to interpret the metaphors as a group and presenting them to the class. Create and learn about mnemonics and acrostic poems easily with this tool. Use JogLab to create a catchy slogan to help you remember terms and ideas. You can browse the ready-made mnemonics, but there do not seem to be many. To explore the keywords of a topic and build you own mnemonic, click the topic History, (for example), then the actual concept, such as Bill of Rights. The keywords will be listed. Click "Create your own mnemonic for Bill of Rights" to generate a mnemonic from this list of keywords. Despite the many windows and scroll bars, the word finder is an easy tool to use. For each letter of the mnemonic, follow the site suggestions of words that can string together into a phrase. Use the part-of-speech sorter to narrow the suggested words to your specification of noun, verb, adjective, etc. These will reinforce parts of speech in the context of sentence making. There are links to advertising and off-site (NOT school friendly) content, so familiarize yourself with the tool before showing it to students to avoid these areas.

Introduce acrostic poems with this tool by building one together on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Demonstrate and use the mnemonic tool on a projector or interactive whiteboard to create an easy way for students to remember a sequence of terms or concepts. After the class has used it together, provide a link to this tool on your class website. Have students create their own mnemonics in small groups and vote on the best as a class. Learning support teachers will want to make this a routine tool for their students to use when reviewing for tests.

If you use Dropbox or Box to collect student work, don't miss this site! Use this tool to move files out of Dropbox or Box and into a different or private folder for grading. This is especially useful if you have a "Turn In" folder where students place completed assignments. Use to sort pictures or videos easily and make the organization of Dropbox easy and automatic. Login easily with your Dropbox account. Create "rules" in this tool that are automatically used in your Dropbox account to move your files around to folders you designate. Files and folders are checked against these rules frequently to keep your Dropbox or Box account neat and tidy.

Use to manage pictures or videos taken in the classroom and uploaded to Dropbox. If you are using Dropbox in your class, set up this site at the beginning of the year to save you time! Create a rule that moves them all into the same folder (or folders) for easy organization and location of files later. Assignments that are turned in can be moved by a rule you create to go to a private folder that can be accessed later for grading.

The Open Canopy, part of the Out of Eden Learn platform, is an engaging online forum designed for students in a wide range of grade levels. It offers 8-12 week "learning journeys" that encourage students from around the world to explore different cultures, share their perspectives, and engage in meaningful discussions. By seeing assignments completed by peers from diverse backgrounds, students gain a broader understanding of global perspectives. The platform promotes respectful dialogue, cultural awareness, and reflection, enabling young learners to develop empathy and effective communication skills. In the Classroom

Assign students to create a story map of their own lives or family histories, inspired by Paul Salopek's journey. They can use a digital tool such as Google My Maps, reviewed here or Padlet, reviewed here or a physical map to highlight meaningful locations and experiences. If students interact with peers on The Open Canopy, they can develop follow-up questions and create video or written responses to continue cross-cultural conversations. Consider making a shared Padlet to communicate back-and-forth. Students can complete a learning journey activity from The Open Canopy and compare their responses with those from students in other countries. This can lead to class discussions about different cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

Media Education Lab offers a twenty-two-video playlist teaching educators and students the purpose of copyright and fair use in digital learning. Most videos are less than fifteen minutes long; however, a couple more extended offerings are approximately twenty minutes long. Topics include plagiarism vs copyright, the future of copyright, and others. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

View the videos shared on this playlist to understand copyright and how to attribute and include copyrighted materials in the classroom appropriately. Use Diffit, reviewed here to extend learning and understanding of the video concepts. Enter the video URL and choose a reading level to automatically create AI-generated resources and student activities, including vocabulary terms, multiple choice questions, and printable activities (look under student activities for items labeled "free this month"). Share videos with parents on your class website to help them understand the importance of properly using copyright and attribution.

This collection of five learning games encourages students in grades K-5 to explore and interact with text. The Detective's Notebook Game asks students to become detectives as they learn inferencing skills. The Fridge Magnet Game teaches students to monitor text and find clarifying words. The Questioning Cube Game helps students create mental connections to text by generating and answering questions. Younger students play The Train Game to develop synthesis skills by grouping words to form sentences and Make Connections provides practice for students to make mental connections between text and information they already know. Each game correlates to standards and includes support materials for educators.
