Use Yippy to pull search results from other search engines and avoid being "tracked" by your own searches. Yippy groups topics together and breaks it up by clusters or "clouds." Yippy self-filters against many topics that students shouldn't be exposed to, such as gambling, pornography, political propaganda, or other inappropriate sites. As always, keep a close eye on students working independently and talk about what to do when something inappropriate comes up. While Yippy is safer than a general search engine, students still need to learn about safe and ethical behavior online, since nothing is foolproof. Enter your search term. View the definition at the top. Different clusters appear along the left navigation side to help refine your search and help beginning searchers learn how to add more specific terms.

tag(s): search engines (41), search strategies (19)

In the Classroom

Use for any topic in any subject area. For example, a search for evolution revealed the following clusters: Texas Board, Biology, Human, and Theory. View more options by clicking on all clouds at the bottom of the list. Discuss with your class what kind of information about the topic that you are looking for before choosing a cloud. Have a broad concept to discuss in class? Assign a specific cloud to each group of students and have them report their findings back to the class. Have a class discussion about how all of the pieces of information fit together. Create a class concept map that ties all the information together. Use a tool such as bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create and share the concept maps.

Learn more about the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and how to observe this occasion with children using the resources available on this site, which shares stories and books with Jewish children worldwide. Begin by reading the short description of Yom Kippur, then access additional resources, including blog posts and book lists. Each blog post includes tools for parents to use with their children to understand this Jewish holiday's meaning and specific activities for families.

In the Classroom

Use the materials on this site in your lessons about religion, holidays, or cross-cultural understanding activities. If available, ask a parent or community member to visit your classroom to discuss their observance of Yom Kippur and the Jewish faith. Use the shared book lists to find books to include in your classroom library so that students can learn more about Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. Part of observing Yom Kippur is reflecting upon the previous year and making plans for the upcoming year; ask students to make resolutions about being more helpful to others in school, for example, inviting others to sit with them at lunch or including new students in recess games. Use Padlet, reviewed here to share students' resolutions using the Sandbox feature that allows you to add sticky notes onto a surface similar to a whiteboard. Using Sandbox tools enables students to add new ideas and document their accomplishments. Extend learning using Gamma, reviewed here, a tool that uses AI to create slide presentations and websites based on your prompt. Use Gamma to make a presentation that tells more about the story of Yom Kippur. Share your presentation using the link provided or export the slides to PowerPoint to personalize and edit as desired.

YoTeach! is a free backchanneling app created for teachers and students. Create a room and set a password then provide the URL to your students. Once in the platform, the site's features allow you to share chat discussions, use the online whiteboard, and upload images. Additional options include a simple polling tool, a "like" button, and student participation statistics. When finished, download the conversation to your computer as a PDF. When creating your room, use settings to control privacy and moderate participants. Students can now engage using anonymous mode.

tag(s): chat (41), communication (126), social networking (54)

In the Classroom

Use this site to connect to other classes to open up a discussion between your students in one convenient place. Safety is not a concern with this site since only those with an email invitation/link or the QR code can participate in a chat. (Your students need not have email. You can simply email the link to yourself and share it with students to enter into their browsers.) Teach good digital citizenship of chat etiquette while using this activity to learn. Connect with other classes to learn about other locations, learn various perspectives, find animals that are similar yet different, learn about the different books others are reading, or survey students on various economic, political, or environmental topics. Be sure to plan content ahead of time, so students have the opportunity to think through the material and formulate a response. Discuss appropriate ways to communicate with others before connecting with another classroom.

Use backchannel chat on laptops during a video or student presentation. Pose questions for all to answer/discuss in the backchannel, or ask students to pose their own "I wonder if..." questions as they watch and listen. Keep every student engaged and THINKING as an active listener. The first time you use backchannel, you will want to establish some etiquette and accountability rules. The advantage of backchannel chat is that every student has a voice, no matter how shy. Use this in world language classes, ESL/ELL classes, or autistic support classes for backchannel chat. Challenge students to use their new language skills to describe a scene from a video or the feelings of the actors. When studying literature, collaborate with another class to have students role-play a chat between two characters. In a history class, create fictional conversations between soldiers on two sides of the Civil War or different sides of the Scopes Monkey trial.

Use this tool in a secondary journalism or social studies class to help students manage complex research projects on current events. Students can start by building a board that collects diverse perspectives from news articles and video interviews, using AI summaries to identify key arguments quickly. To help students organize their initial thoughts before drafting, they can use MindMup, reviewed here, to create a digital map of the different viewpoints they've discovered. After organizing their research, students can use the AI writer to generate a preliminary draft, focusing on integrating their analysis with the facts they gathered. After refining their draft, students can enhance their final presentation by creating a visual companion with Gamma, reviewed here, to turn their written findings into an interactive slide deck or webpage.

Find books for younger children in the "Kids" section. Members can write reviews; however membership is not necessary for other portions of the site. Although aimed at all tweens and teens, most reviews on the main page appear to be books that would appeal only to girls. You may need to take time to explore the site to find material for boys.

Flip learning by having students watch videos at home to provide context before classroom lessons. Use YouTube videos to create an interactive learning experience instead of passive learning by using a site such as Edpuzzle, reviewed here, to modify any video to your lesson. YouTube Teachers and the related YouTube EDU form an education-oriented area of YouTube that categorizes videos into subjects for easy retrieval. YouTube is a vast online video library. You upload, view, share, and comment on content found on the site. Videos found on the full YouTube range from commercial to educational content. YouTube often has questionable content so is blocked in many schools. Some schools block YouTube simply because streaming video "hogs" network resources. If inappropriate content is your administration's main concern, YouTube offers a way your tech department can configure a limited access channel. See the explanation video and related information to share with the tech department. YouTube is very valuable to educators looking for great educational content. There are videos for early elementary concepts like safety up through college-level courses. YouTube has the ability to stream content into channels based upon your viewing preferences, and videos are easily marked as "favorites" to find in your history. It offers suggested channels based on your watching history including trending and popular videos. Parents can filter out objectionable content and comments using Safety Mode -- which is often disabled. Create a YouTube channel to collect videos for easy access by students. Upload teacher-created videos for your class to your channel. Do you know a great video not featured on YouTube EDU? Suggest it for the EDU collection.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Use YouTube Teachers/EDU to create a channel of appropriate videos for your class. Consider creating your own videos of content that can be uploaded to your YouTube channel. Use videos to introduce topics, dig deeper into the content, and review for exams. You may even want to try "flipping" you class so students view the video information as homework and practice with concepts in class the next day. Students can be given the task of finding suitable videos that take the content deeper for better understanding. Create video guides that go with the videos or quizzes that can be given at the end. Assign videos for students to view and give them time to use the information to create a presentation for the rest of the class.

Use this transcript creator in several ways to enhance student learning. Create a transcript to provide a written version of a video's content for hard-of-hearing students or those who will benefit from the audio recording and written content. Multilingual students may benefit from having written text to support video content. Provide a written transcript for students to use when watching a video to add notes and highlight important information. Share a copy of a video transcript in your learning management system for students to access when reviewing information for tests and quizzes. When working with videos that require in-depth discussion, consider copying the transcript into Fiskitt, reviewed here. Fiskett is a collaborative tool for annotating documents online. Ask students to highlight important information, add comments to clarify information, or use the included tags to label information as true or false.

Use ytCropper to highlight specific information from YouTube videos for student use. After creating a shortened clip, encourage students to predict what comes next or use the segment before showing the entire video. Flip your classroom and ask students to use ytCropper to share important information from videos or highlight portions that need further clarification. Using shorter video segments offers many opportunities to use video clips within other online tools. For example, have students enhance their learning by uploading an image related to their science research and add annotations. Use Google Drawings, reviewed here, to include shortened video clips, images, and text to describe the stages of plant growth, introduce a political figure, or provide background for a novel. Google Drawings allows you to annotate an image with links to videos, text, websites, and more. Google Drawings presents a variety of levels for technology use depending on teacher requirements for the project, or even student ability; it allows for adding narration, videos, text, and links to help explain what certain parts of the topic are about. Ask students to include shorter clips within multimedia projects created using a tool like Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here, to redefine classroom technology use and their learning and understanding.

Build your game by adding additional sets of items to add rounds. To play, divide students into teams and start the game. The alphabet appears beginning with Z and going backward, and letters begin to disappear. If the letter is in your set of terms it pops up into the appropriate place - think of Wheel of Fortune. When a player guesses why items are related, pause the game to hear their response. Continue playing if incorrect or move to the next round if correct.

Use the Z-A Quiz Generator as a motivating way to introduce a new unit to students (even as a formative assessment for the class), or to review information before quizzes and tests. Instead of asking students to memorize a set of dates or events, help them by organizing the information into common features. For example, during a Civil War unit group together events taking place in different cities as a way to help provide context for students. Include a link to your quizzes on your class webpage or blog for students to practice at any time using the URL or embed code. Enhance technology use and learning by having students create their own Z-A quizzes to share with peers when studying for tests or use as an introduction with class presentations. When sharing student-created multimedia presentations, modify technology use by using a tool like Sway, reviewed here, to share their final projects including a Z-A quiz for viewers. This quiz generator is also a great resource to use during professional development sessions with your peers. Create a quiz to increase your viewers' interest in your topic as you begin your discussions or as a final activity to review information shared.

ZeeMaps is a browser-based tool for creating and sharing interactive maps without installing software. Add locations manually or import data from sources such as Excel, CSV, KML, and Google spreadsheets. Customize markers with descriptions, photos, video, audio, and your own icons, and highlight geographic regions to emphasize important areas. Viewer, member, and administrator access levels help control collaboration. Share maps through links or embed them on a website. ZeeMaps recommends registering with an email address and password to create maps. Its free trial supports up to five maps with unlimited manually added markers, but spreadsheet uploads are limited to 100 entries per map. Maps freeze after two weeks or 100 views, whichever comes first, unless covered by an active paid subscription.

If you teach geography, this one is a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. Teach map skills by letting students explore and annotate their own community. This site is great on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Create multiple markers for various points within your community. Annotate the markers with specific information that students research. Remember to create an admin password (and save it somewhere safe!) for others to collaborate on the map. Research various places around the world, and create markers of must-see places, historical finds, and other locations of interest. Create a map of news hot spots around the world. In Biology, find places where environmental or biodiversity concerns are occurring. Collaborate on a map to include annotated information of student research about these problems. Create a map to introduce various cultures around the world. Enter video, audio, information, and links that students can use to "uncover" the content to be learned.

Engage students in upcoming lessons by creating and sharing short podcasts as a preview for books to read or about historical characters featured in an upcoming unit. Use Zencastr to create videos for flipped or blended learning lessons. Enhance learning by asking students to create podcasts to share their learning and understanding of topics in a new way. For example, instead of writing a report about George Washington, ask students to create a multi-episode podcast that features important events in his life. Share student and teacher-created podcasts on your class website. Find several free and easy web page makers on TeachersFirst Edge.
