Google Maps is a free mapping tool for exploring places, planning trips, and understanding the relationships between locations. Search for an address, landmark, or business, then zoom in and out or switch to Satellite view to explore imagery of the area. Where available, use Street View's yellow Pegman icon to explore panoramic views of streets and surroundings. These images are not live, and their age and coverage vary by location. Google Maps also helps users find nearby businesses, schools, parks, and other points of interest, get directions, and share locations or routes. A free Google account lets you save favorite places and organize them into lists. The service works in a web browser and is available as a free app for Android and iOS. On a computer, supported maps can be embedded in websites using the sharing menu. For creating custom maps with markers, layers, and imported location files, use the related Google My Maps tool.

In the Classroom
If you teach geography, this one's a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. In lower grades, use it to show students the basics of their community. Teach map skills by showing students their own community. Zoom in on their street or on the school. This site and its more sophisticated cousin, Google Earth, are great on an interactive whiteboard. Set up a class Google account (or use student accounts if permitted). Have students create their own custom route plans to tour historic sites. Challenge math students to plan the most economical route to visit several vacation destinations, including gas mileage and gas prices. Have students create placemark files of the important places in the life of a famous person or the route traveled by a particular unit during the Civil War. Have student groups create placemarker files to show environmental sites, habitats, landforms, or anything you can place on a map. This NASA site serves as a hub for their multi-format coverage of the launch and flight, and there are numerous links from this page to content suitable for various ages and interests. There is a gallery of images from the flight. There is a fact sheet for Discovery, two posters, and a press kit giving an overview of the crew and their activities as part of this mission.
In the Classroom

Start with an everyday pencil and turn it into an investigation of natural resources, production, and the origins of goods. This ready-to-go 45-minute EconEdLink lesson for grades 3-5 asks students to identify natural resources, compare resources found in different U.S. states, and explain how those resources are used to produce goods and services. Materials include presentation slides, a Natural Resources worksheet, a "What Makes Up a Pencil?" activity, an assessment prompt, and extension activities. Students use National Geographic Kids state information for research, work in small groups, and apply what they learn to the resources required to manufacture a pencil. An optional extension features the I, Pencil YouTube video and accompanying viewing questions. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable.

Have students use the lesson's Natural Resources worksheet to research one state, then present how at least one of its resources can become a good or support a service. The worksheet asks students to name the state, identify its natural resources, and connect those resources to resulting goods and services. Have students role-play parts of a pencil's production chain, with each student representing a resource, worker, producer, transportation step, or seller. Afterward, ask the class to explain why one person or location could not easily provide everything needed to make the finished product. Invite small groups to choose a common product such as a book, desk, cereal box, or T-shirt and create a resource-to-product flowchart using Infographic Presentation Templates, reviewed here that shows the natural resources and production steps needed to make it.

Bring energy and water conservation out of the textbook and into students' homes with GetWise, the online resource for LivingWise'®, WaterWise,"?, EnergyWise'®, and related education programs developed by AM Conservation. The site supports hands-on learning about natural resources, renewable and nonrenewable resources, energy and water efficiency, and household conservation. Participating classrooms may receive student guides, take-home workbooks, teacher materials, and kits containing practical conservation products such as LED bulbs, efficient showerheads, and faucet aerators. Teachers can also access additional activities, educational links, FAQs, enrollment information, and state academic standards, although some digital teacher materials require a program login. Availability depends on sponsorship in the school's area, and program kits are limited each school year.

Have students conduct a home energy or water-efficiency audit using ideas from GetWise, then compare their findings in small groups and identify three conservation changes that could make the greatest difference. Invite pairs to calculate or estimate how small household conservation changes could reduce energy or water use over a week, month, or year, then explain which change they would recommend to a family and why. Assign small groups different conservation topics and have them create an informational flyer or presentation with Adobe Creative Cloud Express, reviewed here, which supports flyers, presentations, social media posts, and more. Require each product to include a problem, supporting facts, and practical actions families can take.

The images can be enjoyed by students of all ages -elementary kids will love watching the plants "dance" - but the text on the site is fairly high level and appropriate for high school biology classes.

This kid-friendly site takes a very unique look at the life and times of worms. Students can read about the migration of worms from Europe to American against the backdrop of colonial American history (and you thought the Mayflower carried only pilgrims!), and compare their own family tree with that of Herman's. The site also includes instructions for creating and maintaining a worm bin in the classroom, and great information on worm taxonomy, anatomy, and food preferences. Check out the interactive worm activities and games, as well as the helpful hints in the Teacher's Bin. Also available in Spanish.

Students can learn about fingerprinting, DNA analysis, polygraph tests, and much more. Each informational segment is followed by a printable review game. The links to Safety Tips, Working Dogs, and Games are also worth exploring.

Use this site as a learning center or station during a lesson on the government and how they enforce the laws. Introduce the site over the interactive whiteboard before allowing cooperative learning groups to participate in the online field trip.
