Articles include every imaginable topic. There are publications as "well-known" as New York magazine and as "low-profile" as the Broward-Palm Beach New Times. Search for a topic using the search bar or scroll through current offerings on the home page. Narrow down choices by method of reading such as Instapaper or Kindle format. You can also find podcasts about featured publications and articles. Click on an article's title to read online or print using links provided. Choose the read later button to save to your Longform account. Registration using an email address and password is required for this option.

Loom is a screen-recording and video communication tool that lets users record their screen, webcam, or both at the same time. Record your entire screen, a specific window, a browser tab, or your camera, and include microphone or system audio when supported. Loom automatically creates a shareable link for each recording, making it easy to send tutorials, demonstrations, presentations, feedback, or instructional videos. Viewers can leave comments and emoji reactions on shared videos. Loom is available through a Chrome extension, desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and mobile apps for iOS and Android. The free Starter plan currently allows up to 25 videos per person, with recordings limited to 5 minutes each, and includes unlimited screenshots. Free recordings support video quality up to 720p, while paid plans offer higher-quality recording and additional editing, collaboration, and AI features.

Download and install Loom on classroom computers using Chrome. Have students make screen recordings to share how to use websites or software with their peers. Loud Lit offers "literature for your ears and eyes" (although the site's visual appearance is quite plain!). This collaborative project with the public domain offers recorded literature. You are given the options of listening to the literature, listening and reading the literature, or downloading the literature to an MP3 player. The number of items available for public use is constantly increasing. The current contents include novels, poetry, classic children's literature, a few historical items, and classic short stories. Some examples of available literature include A Tale of Two Cities, The Little Match Girl, The Gift of the Magi, The Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address , and countless others. A separate column shows newly recorded items.

This site is helpful for many subjects and grade levels. Have students use this website when they have to memorize poetry, the Gettysburg Address, or the Declaration of Independence. multilingual students and many learning support students will benefit from the option of "reading" in multi-media format. Use the audio stories with younger students for listening skills. During a poetry unit, why not have students choose one of the poems to read and listen to? Have the students analyze and write in their journals about what they think the poem means. Replace paper journals by using a blog tool like edublogs, reviewed here. Then have the students share the original poem and their own opinions with the class, making this activity a listening, reading, writing, and speaking lesson. The Lowell Milken Center discovers, develops and communicates the stories of Unsung Heroes who have made a profound and positive impact on the course of history. Click Programs on the top menu and select Unsung Hero Projects to learn about everyday people who became heroes by standing up to adversity in their lives. Each project features information about the hero and the storyteller. Some projects include links to student-created web pages and videos. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. Start your own Unsung Hero project using the ten steps provided to include inspiration from start to finish. This resource also includes Lesson Plans.

Share stories from the Unsung Heroes project on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Discuss traits that make a hero and find inspiration to search for heroes in your everyday lives. Use this site as a starting point for individual or group projects. All types of classes can complete a project about an unsung hero. P.E. classes can find out about veterans, surfers, or car accident victims who have lost limbs and used their challenges to make a difference. Math and science students can complete an Internet search for high school inventors. Students could also search through old Scholastic Scope magazines for articles about young people who have overcome adversity. Instead of a paper and pen written biography, extend students' learning by using Fakebook, reviewed here, to create a "fake" page similar in style to Facebook about a hero they have chosen. Modify student learning by challenging them to create an annotated image of a hero including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Google Drawings, reviewed here. There is a link to Sullivan Movies, the creators of the famous Canadian "Anne of Green Gables" series, at which you can buy resources from DVD's to books, posters, etc. if you can't resist shopping. Find links to four online texts of the Anne books as part of the Gutenburg collection.Use passages from these online texts for interactive whiteboard activities from parts of speech to analyzing writing style, then introduce the author once the students are "hooked" by the passages!

The J Murray Atkins Library at UNC offers a fine array of online curriculum. This site begins with Reading and Writing questions that teachers can use to guide the study of Katherine Paterson's work. The lessons include vocabulary, spelling, library resources and some great ideas teachers can use to connect the book to other strands in the curriculum. If you need interdisciplinary ideas for the Industrial Revolution, here they are!

In the Classroom
After watching an episode, have students work in small groups to solve a problem similar to the one Lyla faces. They can brainstorm, draw solutions, or act them out to reinforce critical thinking and teamwork. Use the "Loops and Patterns" activity from the website to introduce students to basic coding concepts. Have them create simple movement sequences, which can include clapping or hopping in a pattern, to understand loops in a hands-on way. Use the "Step-by-Step Storytelling" activity to guide students in creating their own stories using clear sequences of events. Encourage students to keep a journal where they record everyday problems and sketch creative solutions, just like Lyla. They can present their ideas to the class, reinforcing the problem-solving mindset seen in the show. This site offers an easy way for teachers to encourage students to do extensive reading. It contains quizzes for thousands of commonly read Penguin graded readers, and also a classroom management system. M-Reader also offers many classics rewritten for lower reading levels as well as the original higher reading level. After a simple institutional registration, teachers can select the books they want students to read outside of class, set up a classroom, and show student progress. Teachers do not have to make quizzes. It automatically displays grades and records quizzes. Each student, even ones reading the same books, receive different quizzes. Books are available at up to eight different levels so students can begin at a level comprehensible to them and go up. Once a student completes a book, a quiz is provided. If the student is successful on the quiz, they receive a book cover in their file. Students can see the progress of other students in the class and compare themselves to other readers. Check with your administration about the feasibility of setting up an institutional registration. Unlike other popular "read it and take a quiz" programs, it is FREE!

In the Classroom
Demonstrate how the program works using a projector or interactive whiteboard. Students can then read, quiz, and display their results and progress on their own. This program is perfect for differentiating in the classroom where beginning English learners are mainstreamed with English native speaking learners. You can assign the same book to all readers at a certain level, and they will all have a different quiz to take. This assures that you know exactly how each student is doing since they can't share quiz answers with each other.
