This site provides information in response to student requests on the taiga biome to help answer questions and serve as a prompt to promote further study. Scroll through to view information divided into sections describing taiga, threats to the biome, and links to organizations interested in the future of the taiga.
In the Classroom
This site is very text intensive. Try using a word cloud tool like Wordsift, reviewed here, to identify and highlight important words found within the text to clarify content for all students, especially those with special learning needs. Wordsift also provides images and highlights text found within sentences to provide important context of information shared. As students complete the biome unit, ask them to create explanation videos sharing information from this site and others used during the unit. For example, use the Post-It Labeling tool to upload an image of a biome and add sticky notes to identify and explain items found. In the Classroom
Share this crossword on your interactive whiteboard to introduce your biome unit and assess prior knowledge. Have students use the words from the puzzle and find online images to use as examples of each definition. Ask students to create a Google Drawings, reviewed here, using their images. Google Drawings allows you to annotate an image with links to videos, text, websites, and more. Have students create their own crossword puzzle with terms related to your study of biomes. HTML 5 Crossword Generator, reviewed here, allows users of any technology level to easily create their own puzzles to solve online or download as a PDF document. Don't let the basic look of this website fool you; it contains many resources for teaching about the rainforest biome. In addition to the information on the home page, there are many resources found by clicking on icons near the top of the page next to the arrow stating "Click on me." Learn about species found in the rainforest, scientist profiles, rainforest conservation, and a small selection of locations around the world containing rainforests.

In the Classroom
Include this site as part of your teaching resources for the rainforest biome. Instead of creating a folder on student computers with links to various resources, consider using a bookmarking site like Symbaloo, reviewed here, to gather all of your favorite sites into one easy to use place for students. Instead of taking notes into a notebook as students gather information about the rainforest, have them write blogs sharing facts, images, and discussion of conservation efforts. Replace paper pen by asking students to write blogs sharing information learned using a tool like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs. As a way to enhance student understanding, challenge students to complete a culminating project for your biome unit by creating and sharing custom maps using Google My Maps,reviewed here, to send visitors on a virtual field trip of rainforests across the globe.
